Workshop structure

Where an individual BCM project requires it, the ETP team will construct and facilitate a Business Continuity workshop, bringing together key representatives from a client's organisation and drawing out risks and control/recovery activities etc.

The structure of individual workshops will be largely dependent on the roles and responsibilities of the participants and, from experience will need to be sufficiently flexible to adapt to the 'personality dynamic' in the room at the time.

The primary objective of workshops is to facilitate, not to lead, to act as a catalyst and provide the framework in which participants can take ownership and feel responsible for the identification of risks and recovery strategies etc. To this end we encourage participants to 'stand-up and get involved' through the hands-on use of 'flip-charts', pens and 'post-it' stickers etc.

Inevitably the initial stages will involve a more presentational style, outlining the approach and fundamental principles of business continuity management. The latter part of the day would also be structured to allow for a period of rationalisation, consensus, review of the workshop objectives and actions going forward. To this extent we find the operation of 'actions' and 'issues' lists to be beneficial, to record and assign specific actions or note issues to be resolved outside of the workshop environment.

Preplanning is essential to the effective facilitation of these workshop sessions in order to gain a sound understanding of key roles and responsibilities, the nature of the primary business functions, processes and business/commercial environment.
