IT risks controlled in M oscow
The implementation of new IT systems is
always fraught with problems. When these systems are being implemented
in a new £30m manufacturing operation on the outskirts of
Moscow, these problems can take on a whole new dimension.
Working closely with the local British and Russian
management team, the review of systems and operational risks resulted
in a number of policy and procedural control recommendations including
user training and education in respect of personal responsibility
and empowerment, and utilising the systems to enhance the business
processes not constrain them.
Whilst risk identification was a simple enough
task, the implementation of effective controls and pre-planned recovery
activities presented more of a challenge, as did the acceptance
of these western business practices within the Russian culture.
Never keen to turn down a challenge, we were sad
to see that our efforts in Moscow failed to realise their potential
when the business was closed down for commercial reasons by the
UK parent company.
